Burger Centre
together with
Emanuel School
OtherNoGift of Light
Joint intergenerational project between Emanuel Students (Yr 6) and Burger Centre Clients, being held on Tuesday 26th November 2019 12.30pm - 1.50pm at the Burger Centre.

The project is for the students and clients to join together and make Solar lamps through the Social Buddy program (https://solarbuddy.org/) to provide the gift of light to energy impoverished communities around the world. These lamps allow the children to read and do their homework with safe light to provide them the opportunity of education and a better future. Without such lamps children either are unable to do any work after dark or do so with kerosene lamps that are most unsafe.

The project aims to education, provide opportunity for meaningful intergenerational engagement with a range of cross subject/educational benefits across science, (making of the solar lamp and understanding the environmental conditions others live in), Jewish Studies - meaningful way of giving at Chanukah, importance of tzedakah (by making and doing) and Mitzvoth outside of their own community. Giving understanding of how other children their age live around the world and providing them with a means of making a long lasting gift at this special time of the year.

There will be a talk given first by representatives from Solar Buddy before making the lights and then adding a personalised message to each lamp that will be sent to our chosen community African (Zimbabwe). They will have lunch together, spend time with their peers and with Seniors of our community learning together and building the solar lamps that will then be sent to the community in Africa.
